Does Anyone Need Nine Gears?
Posted On: 3/5/2013 8:26AM

I can remember being driven around by my father many years ago and was absolutely amazed  when I was told that the car we were in had a three speed auto. It really is amazing how things have changed with technology. The question these days is how many more gears do you really need? According to the good folk at Land Rover nine gears is what you need as it will give you an increase in fuel efficiency as well as making for a smoother ride. If you can't make it to their gear box debut at the Geneva motor show you can check out this Land Rover website for more details.

So what do you think of nine gears?

I'm fine with it for an auto, but I still prefer my manuals to be 5 speed.

Yep, with all those gears and constant shifting between them, I see the transmissions not lasting as long and totalling the thing when they go bad. Should be able to pick them up cheap in about 10 years though.

Well my work truck is a 10speed but i see no need for it if you aren't moving 50,000 pounds. 6 speeds is plenty, more than needed in most cases (always shifting between gears at the speeds i drive)
